Here's an assessment of how the players fared:
CELTIC
Fraser Forster - the goalkeeper was one of the heroes in this fixture last year but was given Little chance with Fabregas' goal. Made three great stops to prevent a heavier defeat. 8
Adam Matthews - the Welshman started in right midfield rather than his usual defensive position but spent most of the match helping Lustig deal with Neymar. His pace looked a threat going forward but he struggled to find a cross into the box. 6
Emilio Izaguirre - managed to contain Pedro but was caught out of position when Sanchez came on and set up the winner. 5
Efe Ambrose - the defender played Barcelona at their own game when could by dribbling the ball out of defence. 7
Virgil van Dijk - with no direct Barcelona striker the Dutchman had to stay alert and track numerous runs which he did well. 7
Mikael Lustig - had the tough task of marking Neymar but stuck to it well, yellow carded for a foul when Neymar beat him on the edge of the box. 6
Scott Brown - was in the midst of his usual battling midfield display when he was red carded in the aftermath of a trip on Neymar. 5
Charlie Mulgrew - the Scot was piggy in the middle as Iniesta and Xavi put on thier usual passing masterclass. Perhaps should have done better with a header when Valdes missjudged a Commons corner. 6
Kris Commons (pictured) - a quiet night for the midfielder who has scored many important goals for Celtic in the big occasions. 5
Giorgios Samaras - celtic's main threat with direct runs and seemed to take on Barcelona on his own at times. Often found himself with little support. 8
Anthony Stokes - starved of service upfront as was expected but was more involved in the game after Brown's red card as he helped out in midfield. 5
Substitutes:
James Forrest - almost scored with his first touch bringing a great save from Valdes. 5
Beram Kayal - brought on to shore up midfield after Brown was sent off and did his job. 5
Teemu Pukki - the new striker was given little chance to find an equaliser. 4
BARCELONA
Victor Valdes - was a spectator for most of the evening but was alert to make a great save from Forrest midway through the second half. 7
Adriano - the full-back did not get forward as much as Alves but patrolled the left side well by stopping any Celtic attacks quickly. 6
Dani Alves - the Brazilian got forward at every opportunity he could and a good ball in the first half almost led to Neymar opening the scoring. 7
Marc Bartra - the youngster had a difficult night against Celtic last year but seemed more prepared this time round and matched Samaras' runs well. 6
Gerard Pique - brought experience to the Barcelona defence which was missing last year and coped with any danger posed by Stokes and Samaras. 6
Sergio Busquets - passed with usual precision and was the base for all his team's possession play. 7
Xavi Hernandez - a couple of loose passes early on were rare mistakes from the captain and he grew to control the game in his usual manner. 7
Andres Iniesta - almost three full minutes of Barcelona possession at the start of the match set the tone - and Iniesta was at the heart of it. 7
Cesc Fabregas - was frustrated by a lack of space given to him until he headed well past Forster. 7
Pedro Rodriguez - quiet night for the forward who was unable to use his pace to get behind a deep Celtic defence. 5
Neymar - the Brazilian may be one of the biggest stars in world football but he was unpopular with the home crowd for his role in Brown's red card. His every touch in the second half was met with boos but he continued to look like Barcelona's most dangerous attack. 7
Substitutes:
Alexis Sanchez - came on for Pedro and made an almost instant impact by crossing for Fabregas to head the only goal. 7
Tello - the youngster came on for the final 10 minutes. 4
Song - on for Fabregas as Barca made sure of their win. 4
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
