Celtic's Lawwell joins SFA board

PETER Lawwell, the Celtic chief executive, was appointed to the main Scottish Football Association board yesterday, three years after first joining the governing body, Lawwell came into the SFA fold in the summer of 2011 when he became one of the 10 founder members of its new Professional Game Board representing the interests of the senior clubs.

He was yesterday appointed to the main board where he will sit along with chief executive Stewart Regan and president Campbell Ogilvie.

Also joining the main SFA board yesterday was Scottish Professional Football League chairman Ralph Topping. In November, 2012, the former Scottish Premier League announced that Topping was to step down as its independent chairman at the end of the 2012-13 season because of his work commitments as chief executive of William Hill.

Instead Topping remained involved when the SPL was replaced by the new, four-division Scottish Professional Football League last year. "We are delighted to welcome Ralph back to the main board, having already benefited from Peter's wealth of experience in the past year," said Regan.

"I am sure both will play key roles as we enter the next phase of our strategic plan, Scotland United: A 2020 Vision."

Neil Doncaster, the SPFL chief executive, explained Topping's ongoing involvement was down to a change in his circumstances: "Ralph Topping will be stepping down from the William Hill Board on 1st August. He will therefore have much more time to devote to the professional game.

"We are delighted that Peter Lawwell and Ralph Topping have been unanimously elected by the Professional Game Board to serve the professional game on the main board of the Scottish FA."

The main SFA board now consists of Regan, Ogilvie, first vice-president Alan McRae (Cove Rangers), second vice-president Rod Petrie (Hibs), Tom Johnston (Scottish Junior FA), Barrie Jackson (independent, non-executive), Lawwell (Celtic) and Topping (SPFL).

Meanwhile the SPFL's board consists of Doncaster, Topping, Eric Riley (Celtic), Duncan Fraser (Aberdeen), Stephen Thompson (Dundee United), Mike Mulraney (Alloa), Eric Drysdale (Raith Rovers) and Ken Ferguson (Brechin City).
