Bayern Munich took complete control of Group E in the Champions League with a stunning 7-1 win away at Roma.
Arjen Robben opened the scoring and Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski added goals before Robben's second made it 4-0 with just half an hour on the clock.
Thomas Muller added a fifth from the penalty spot before the break but Gervinho got the Italians on the board.
The punishment was not over, though, as Franck Ribery and Xherdan Shaqiri extended the lead for the German champions.
The result maintained Bayern's 100 per cent record and boosted the qualification hopes of Manchester City, who had earlier thrown away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at CSKA Moscow.
That left Manuel Pellegrini's men two points behind second-placed Roma.
Luiz Adriano became just the second man after Lionel Messi to score five goals in a Champions League game as Shakhtar Donetsk demolished BATE Borisov 7-0.
Alex Teixeira grabbed the first after 11 minutes before Adriano netted from the penalty spot and Douglas Costa added a third.
Adriano then added a seven-minute hat-trick to make it 6-0 at the break and his second from the spot completed the scoring with eight minutes to play.
In the other game in Group H, goals from Hector Herrera and Ricardo Quaresma sandwiched a Fernandez Guillermo effort as leaders Porto beat Athletic Bilbao 2-1.
As Chelsea thrashed Maribor 6-0 at Stamford Bridge to strengthen their position at the top of Group G, there was a much closer contest in Gelsenkirchen as Schalke claimed a 4-3 win over Sporting Lisbon.
Nani had the visitors ahead but they were then reduced to 10-men as Nascimento Mauricio was sent packing for two yellow cards.
Chinedu Obasi Ogbuke levelled the scores and when Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Benedikt Howedes scored for the Germans the game looked to be up.
But Sebastien Adrien Silva bagged a brace to level things up before Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting netted from the spot in stoppage time to hand Schalke the win.
In Group F, Barcelona claimed a 3-1 home win over Ajax.
Neymar and Lionel Messi had Barca 2-0 up and they looked to be cruising until Anwar El Ghazi handed the Dutch champions a lifeline with two minutes to play.
But Sandro Ramirez's stoppage-time goal eased the nerves for Luis Enrique's men.
In the night's other game, Edinson Cavani's 87th-minute strike gave Paris St Germain a 1-0 win over APOEL to move them a point ahead of Barca at the top of the group.
