Manchester City, the Barclays Premier League champions, closed out a series of deals that allowed Roberto Mancini to refresh the fringes of his squad, if not landing the kind of talent it would take to claim a first-team shirt immediately. At Tottenham Hotspur, Hugo Lloris, the France goalkeeper, was the pick of the deals, with Clint Dempsey making the kind of late run that typified his performances last season as he crossed London from Fulham.
