Kris Commons wants Celtic to open talks on extending his Parkhead career.

The playmaker will be 31 at the start of next season and his next deal could conceivably be his last. He signed a three-and-a-half year contract when he joined from Derby County in January, 2011, and Celtic have the option of keeping him for a further 12 months after that.

Neil Lennon, his manager, confirmed earlier this month that he would take up the option to retain Commons but the player admitted the issue had yet to be discussed with him.

"I saw that on the back of the papers! I haven't heard anything yet. I'm still looking for this [reported] three-year deal, is that floating around anywhere? I'd like to stay. They've got the option next year; I've still got another year after this.

"I think it's important for me just to keep playing, keep scoring, keep in the manager's eye and see where it takes us."

Earlier this week Commons was named as the SPFL Premiership player of the month for December, continuing the fine form he has shown this season. He has scored 16 times in 27 appearances to make him the club's leading scorer. Seven of those goals came in December.

"It's been a good spell, not just for me but December was a very good month," he said. "Getting knocked out of the Champions League put our full focus on our league form and when we beat Hearts away and then the Motherwell game [7-0 and 5-0 wins respectively], we were on a good roll.

"We started looking at targets, clean sheet targets, winning, staying unbeaten, that kind of thing. Our sole focus was on the SPFL rather than the distraction of the Champions League and that was a benefit.

"When the draw came out in the Champions League, no-one expected us to do much anyway. Everyone said it was the 'Group of Champions' and the 'Group of Death'. If we had got anything from the games it would have been brilliant but realistically, when you're looking at the calibre of side we were playing, we just had to try to give ourselves a bit of credit.

"I think along the way we could have done a little bit better. But that's top-level football and it's cutthroat at the top end."

Meanwhile, Tom Rogic will complete a loan move to Melbourne Victory today. The Celtic midfielder will make his debut for his new club next week against Sydney FC, who had a bid to buy the 21-year-old turned down.

The Australian internationalist has been a fringe player at Parkhead, making just five starts, and Lennon consented to allow the 21-year-old to return home on loan to get some playing time before the World Cup in the summer.

Rogic has agreed to move to Melbourne and will play in the A-League and the Asian Champions League under his new manager, former Rangers defender Kevin Muscat, until the end of this season.

"I understand that Sydney made contact with Celtic, who were not willing to sell the player," said his agent, Daniel Berman. "In those circumstances, it was never a matter for our consideration."
