Constrained by embargo, but Rangers have a shopping list

AS Charles Green revealed plans to seek admission to the AIM market of the London stock exchange and raise up to £20m in working capital, the Rangers chief executive reeled off a list as long as his arm of things he would like to do with the money.

It was fairly wide-ranging and typically ambitious, ranging from constructing new members' bars to upgrading the ticket office as well as developing the stadium.

Amid all these grand plans, there was talk, too, about what this proposed cash injection – if it came to light – might mean for Ally McCoist and the playing side of the club. Rangers' failure to sign the quantity of players McCoist felt he needed before the start of a year-long signing embargo left the manager frustrated and concerned about the depth of his squad. Their struggles this season as they adapt to the demands of the Irn-Bru Third Division have further enhanced the view that an insufficient number of players were brought in to replace the crux of last term's squad, who elected against transferring their contracts over from the old company to the new following the onset of liquidation.
