CELTIC are edging towards a deal for Virgil van Dijk after Groningen revealed they would sell the Dutch under-21 defender this summer.

Reports in the Netherlands claim the clubs are close to agreeing a fee after Celtic had two bids rejected and that a medical is scheduled for later this week. "Celtic is a fantastic club and a step up for me," said the centre-back. "Now I have to wait until the clubs agree."

Across the city, one deal that has been completed is the return of Steven Smith to Rangers. The 28-year-old has signed a two-year contract with the third division champions but insists the fitness issues that hampered his first spell at Ibrox are behind him. "I'm fit and healthy and I'm going to be able to get a pre-season," he said. "I'll be ready and although it'll have been almost a year since my last game, I'm fine with that."
