MORTON finally found their scoring touch to end Falkirk's proud unbeaten home league record and take a major step towards safety.

Guilty of wasteful finishing in the first period, second-half goals from Michael Tidser and Archie Campbell allowed the Greenock side to move nine points clear of bottom club Queen of the South and six ahead of Raith Rovers in the play-off spot.

It was Falkirk's first defeat in 14 home league matches. With only pride to play for as champions-elect Ross County disappear over the horizon, Steven Pressley's side remain in third position.

Michael McGovern, cleared to play after Falkirk appealed his red card against County on Saturday, immediately made his presence felt to deny David O'Brien in the opening minutes. Alan Combe, the veteran Morton goalkeeper, bettered that stop moments later, though. Willie Gibson's shot was destined for the top corner but Combe clawed it away. David Weatherston then missed a glaring chance at the back post for Falkirk.

Morton soon found their passing range and makeshift right-back Stewart Murdoch endured a torrid first half. The visitors' finishing was woeful, though: O'Brien hesitated when put clear by Tidser, while Peter MacDonald could only find the side-netting after rounding McGovern. The Falkirk goalkeeper also saved from Campbell.

Weatherston's drive flashed wide as Falkirk enjoyed some brief respite, but normal service was resumed as Derek Young, the Morton midfielder, sent a shot skidding past.

It was no surprise Murdoch was put out of his misery at the break but, despite Jordan White passing up a wonderful opportunity to give the hosts the lead, Morton remained in command and took the lead in 57 minutes. Campbell's pace took him free on the right and his cross found Tidser, whose shot squirmed under McGovern and crept over the line.

Bennett hit a post as Falkirk searched for an equaliser, but Mark Millar was then forced to clear Andy Graham's towering header off the line as Morton looked for a second.

As Falkirk pressed, gaps appeared and Campbell profited. Fouad Bachirou burst from deep and found the perfect pass for the striker, whose finish was emphatic.
