The former Scotland and Rangers midfielder travelled to London on Monday to see a specialist, who recommended Ferguson have surgery. The Blackpool captain has missed his team's last two matches and Alex Rae, assistant manager, said the 35-year-old will be out for a lengthy period.
Rae said: "We don't know how long he'll be out yet, but once we get the surgeon's report we'll know more. It's a body blow for us. He's one of our key players. But it give someone else an opportunity and we maybe need to bring someone in to plug that gap."
