Dunfermline Athletic gave notice that they do not intend to hang around in the first division as they dismantled Cowdenbeath 4-0 at Central Park.
The Fife derby held more than a few perils for a side fresh from the SPL but Dunfermline handled it admirably from the moment Andy Barrowman gave them the lead a minute from half-time.
After matching Dunfermline for much of the first half, and Marc McKenzie being denied by Paul Gallacher, the home side failed to deal with a long throw-in from Andy Geggan and, when goalkeeper Thomas Flynn swithered, Barrowman took advantage.
In the second half, Ryan Thomson headed in an Alex Whittle cross then scored again after good work from Josh Falkingham, who added the fourth.
It was 16 years since Dumbarton played in the first division and they looked out of their depth in the first half at Airdrie United as John Boyle fired in a hat-trick after barely half an hour. He beat the offside trap to open the scoring after 14 minutes, scored his second with a shot on the turn and completed his treble when he rounded Stephen Grindlay after a mistake by Martin McNiff. Jim Lister scrambled a goal back in the second half before Paul di Giacomo made it 4-1 late on.
Partick Thistle made a bright start as they saw off Falkirk 3-1 at Firhill with Kris Doolan contributing a goal in either half.
A left-foot shot from Steven Lawless opened the scoring after four minutes and, before Falkirk had time to settle, Doolan added a second three minutes later.
Lyle Taylor gave Falkirk hope with a neatly taken goal eight minutes after the break but Doolan struck within minutes.
Morton and Livingston shared an entertaining 2-2 draw at Cappielow. Peter Weatherson headed home a David O'Brien cross early on but Livingston scored twice before half-time.
Iain Russell equalised from Ross Docherty's pass, then Stefan Scougall headed them in front six minutes from the interval.
Paul Watson cleared a Weatherson effort off the line as Morton went for Livingston in the second half but Tony Wallace finally came up with a close-range equaliser with 10 minutes left.
In a frantic finish Stephen Stirling and Weatherson were both denied by Andy McNeil and Livingston clung on.
Raith Rovers beat Hamilton Academical 2-0 at Starks Park thanks to a second-half double from Brian Graham.
His first came from the penalty spot after being fouled by Martin Canning in the 63rd minute with the clincher being a low shot past Kevin Cuthbert from Jason Thomson's pass.
Raith had chances to add to their tally, with both Pat Clarke and Allan Walker going close, but new manager Grant Murray was satisfied with the winning start.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
