REGARDLESS of the emotions they provoke, the images of Rangers' last visit to Rugby Park will live long in the memory.

Another potential Helicopter Sunday promised to deliver a further afternoon of nail-biting tension. However, Walter Smith’s side were on the perfect flight path after only seven minutes courtesy of two goals from Kyle Lafferty and a cute Steven Naismith finish – moments of skill which ultimately rendered Celtic’s 4-0 win over Motherwell meaningless.

Danny Buijs, the Kilmarnock right back, was still plying his trade with ADO Den Haag when the Ibrox team recorded their third consecutive Clydesdale Bank Premier League championship on the final day of last season. He was not culpable for the defensive collapse – the match ended 5-1 – but is well aware that a similar performance will not be tolerated.“I heard all about it,” the 29-year-old said. “I know the guys were 3-0 down after such a short space of time. If you were involved in a game like that then I’m sure you would never forget it. It’s up to us to show that something like that won’t happen again. I just hope we can do much better when we play Rangers on Sunday.“I’ve always thought that these are the most beautiful games to play in, and when you get a good result it’s great. Rangers have more money than us, they have bigger crowds and are also one of the biggest teams in the country. It will obviously be tough, but we showed against Celtic [Buijs helped his side to a 3-3 draw with Neil Lennon’s team last month] that we have a chance. If we give a good performance and have a little bit of luck then I think anything is possible.”It has been 17 years since Kilmarnock last defeated Rangers at Rugby Park, and the Ayrshire side have lost 54 meetings since. Buijs, who revealed that many friends and family are travelling to the match, admitted it would be “nice to change history”.“It would be great,” said the Dutchman. “It’s going to be very difficult, but in football you just never know. We are aware that Rangers can punish us, because they have such great players.“However, if we don’t make too many mistakes then we will have a chance. It’s very close at the bottom of the league and a win would really help create some distance.”
