HIBERNIAN have reluctantly ended their attempts to sign Leigh Griffiths after a meeting with Wolverhampton Wanderers failed to persuade the npower League One club to part with the striker.

Rod Petrie, the Hibs chairman, travelled south last week to meet Jez Moxey, Wolves' chief executive, in an attempt to sign the Scotland cap, who scored 28 goals while on loan at Easter Road last term. However, Wolves rejected the confidential offer and have no intention to sell.

"I wanted to meet Jez to impress upon him the desire of Hibernian to acquire the services of Leigh on a permanent basis," Petrie said. "We had a cordial meeting and I put firm proposals on the table. However, these have been rejected outright. Reluctantly, we have to conclude that there is nothing further that can be done at this time to prise the player away from Wolves."
