It is hard to imagine that a year ago Jamie Langfield was fighting for his life having been struck down by a brain seizure – a period which put football and his future as the Aberdeen goalkeeper into sharp relief.

It was understandable, then, that his reappearance between the goalposts against Inverness Caledonian Thistle would be an interesting aspect of a game that fell significantly short on quality, particularly from Aberdeen, surely still wondering today how they managed to return to the Granite City with full points.

Two second-half own goals – from Roman Golobart and Kenny Gillet – made a mockery of this dismal affair, though for the Aberdeen goalkeeper his three important stops early on afforded him a confidence boost and kept at bay a then energetic Inverness team.Langfield looked back yesterday on those dark days of the past year following his collapse, and pronounced himself happy now that he has been given the all-clear. "The longer it went on, especially when you get back fit," he said, "you feel it's never going to happen again."I just kept my head down, worked as hard as I could and tried to show the manager and the coaching staff as best an attitude as I could, and it finally paid off. I'm just grateful that I got the opportunity to come back."Terry Butcher, the Inverness manager, had a right to feel disappointed that his side once more came away with nothing, despite their superiority, and will scour the country in search of a goalscorer able to capitalise on some of the creative play of which they are capable."We've been the better team in terms of possession and efforts on goal," he said. "They haven't had an effort until right at the end, but we've scored two goals for them. It sums up our luck this season.
