The Scot was confirmed over the weekend as the new head coach at The Hawthorns.
He had hitherto been employed in the academy at Everton - having been brought in by David Moyes - and Irvine has the same feeling about West Brom as he had when first walking into Goodison.
"The situation at this club is similar to what I went through at Everton," said the 55-year-old. "It is run very sensibly and, as a result of that, any head coach coming in has got a great chance of doing a good job. But the first job is to get some more players in."
