Partick Thistle manager Jackie McNamara today emerged as the surprise replacement for Peter Houston as Dundee united boss.

The Tannadice club are expected to unveil the former Celtic and Aberdeen player as their new manager on Wednesday.

McNamara, 39, has steered the Jags to second place in SFL 1 in his second season at Firhill.

That has been his first management position after a lengthy playing career with Dunfermline, Celtic, Wolves, Aberdeen, Falkirk, and Thistle.

Thistle confirmed they had granted their boss permission to speak to the Tayside club.

McNamara and Falkirk boss Steven Pressley emerged as the leading candidates to replace Peter Houston in the past few days and reports that the Jags boss would be unveiled tomorrow were followed by a statement from the Glasgow club.

It read: "Following an approach from Dundee United, the board of directors of Partick Thistle Football Club have reluctantly granted permission for Jackie McNamara and Simon Donnelly to speak to them about their vacant managerial position."

Their first game in charge could be against Rangers in the Scottish Cup on Saturday, in a match for which the Ibrox club is officially organising a boycott by fans.

Houston announced two weeks ago that he would be leaving United at the end of the season, but brought forward his departure by leaving the club on Monday.
