Tommy Wright, the St Johnstone manager, believes Scotland manager Gordon Strachan was too slow in calling up striker Stevie May, and is disappointed because St Johnstone could have demanded a bigger transfer fee for an internationalist striker.

May has scored three goals in a promising start since his £800,000 August switch to Sky Bet Championship club Sheffield Wednesday. Wright handed May a first-team place and was rewarded with 29 goals in a season capped by a Scottish Cup win. "Everybody here is thrilled for him," he said.

"It's a just reward for a lot of hard work Stevie has put in. It's a great achievement. I know there will be people who will say as soon as he has moved to a bigger club he has got his call-up. Yes, in a perfect world, it would have been nice if it had happened while he was still a St Johnstone player. It would have put his transfer fee up a bit for starters! But Gordon has to pick players when he thinks they are ready.

"If and when he gets his first cap there will be nothing but pride here for a local boy who is part of this club's history for all he did last season."
