WES FODERINGHAM, the Rangers goalkeeper, has revealed he turned down approaches from English Championship clubs this summer to pursue his ambition of playing Champions League football with Mark Warburton's side.

Foderingham has signed a three-year contract with Rangers to become the latest addition to Warburton's squad ahead of the new campaign following the acquisitions of defenders Danny Wilson and Rob Kiernan from Hearts and Wigan respectively last month. The former England youth internationalist was a free agent after leaving Swindon Town at the end of last season.

A number of clubs in the second flight of English football had been interested in signing Foderingham this summer before Warburton made his move to bring him to Ibrox. Rangers are preparing for their second shot at the Championship title next term but the 24-year-old has lofty ambitions for Warburton's side.

"The English Championship is a good league if you want to be an English Championship player," Foderingham said. "I don't want to be an English Championship player, I want to play higher than that. The best way to do that is at Rangers.

"If I joined another Championship side in England, I wouldn't have the chance to play in the Champions League in a couple of years. This gives me the best opportunity and there is no English Championship club with the stature of Rangers, so it was a first choice.

"Scottish football has come on over the years. There is a divide from the top of the SPL to the rest, but it's not a bad level. Rangers is a massive club and I was very pleased when I heard of the interest and pleased when I signed."

With Wilson, Kiernan and Foderingham on board, Warburton can turn his attentions to further up the park as he attempts to strengthen his squad for the new season. John Eustace, the former Derby County midfielder, will train with Rangers for the next four weeks as Warburton assesses his fitness ahead of a move that could see the 35-year-old sign a twelve month deal at Ibrox.

The Rangers boss has also started reshaping his backroom staff at Murray Park after Gordon Durie and Jim Henry both left the club. Durie, the former Rangers striker, returned to Ibrox two years ago and worked in the youth department before being part of Stuart McCall's staff last season. Head of Athletic Performance Henry was appointed in the summer of 2013 but is not part of Warburton's plans going forward.
