There was little that was positive for Everton to take away from Russia last night.

A valuable point in Group H of the Europa League would have to do, after Samuel Eto'o prodded in a late equaliser just eight minutes from the end of an often uncomfortable evening for the Barclays Premier League side.

Eto'o, now 33 and with experience of playing in Russia following a spell at Anzhi Makhachkala, got on the end of a cross from Leighton Baines to secure the draw, but Everton had never been ahead of their opponents. Krasnodar took a deserved lead after 43 minutes when Brazilian striker Ari capitalised on a mistake by Phil Jagielka - Everton's captain and the goalscoring hero from Saturday's Merseyside derby draw at Liverpool - to stroke the ball into the net.

The hosts came close to making it 2-0 after the break when substitute Wanderson's shot hit the bar, with Everton often appearing off the pace and uncertain of themselves.

This was perhaps not a first-choice Everton XI; Roberto Martinez brought Eto'o and winger Aiden McGeady - another player to have plied his trade for a Russian club in the past - into his team as he made five adjustments ahead of Sunday's trip to Manchester United. Tony Hibbert even started at full-back.

Yet it took a cross from Baines and a cool finish from Eto'o to give them anything more to smile about.
