Langfield has earned offer of a new contract

Craig Brown's balancing act of trying to finish the season strongly while attempting to offer first-team opportunities to the younger, untried members of his squad, could come into play at Inverness Caledonian Thistle today.

The Aberdeen manager, while playing his cards close to his chest on the issue of which of his out-of-contract personnel will be invited to remain at Pittodrie, did reveal goalkeeper Jamie Langfield has been offered a new deal.

Langfield, who suffered a seizure in the summer and dropped out of the reckoning, will be in the side against Inverness."Jamie deserves a clean sheet for the way he has conducted himself and he deserves a new contract with the club," said Brown. Josh Magennis, the striker who has scored only four goals in 47 appearances since his arrival from Cardiff City almost two years ago, is being groomed as a potential right-back as he awaits the offer of a new deal."I'm in the process of trying out in a new position," said the 21-year-old from Northern Ireland. "Archie Knox [the assistant manager] pulled me aside and said that no-one had nailed down the right-back spot and was I prepared to give it a go. I've just got to wait and give 100% because the decision on my future is out of my hands."Terry Butcher, the Inverness manager, says "bloodying the nose" of bigger clubs with richer traditions and bank balances remains the measure of success for his club. Given the injury problems this season, Butcher will view finishing above clubs such as Hibernian and Aberdeen as a significant mark of achievement. "Aberdeen's ambitions and expectations are a lot higher than ours with the squad they have got, the money, the support and the history of the club," said the manager. "We're just delighted to be in this division. We dropped out and came back well last year."We are not going to achieve the same points tally as last season when we finished seventh, but we are still in the SPL. We're thrilled that even with the incredible injuries, suspensions and everything else we have had this season that we are still in the league."
