Manager Craig Levein was happy with what he described as an improvement from their last encounter, a 3-1 friendly win over Australia last month.
"We were hoping to win the match, but these things happen and overall we played very well, there's been a definite progression," he said.
His skipper Gary Caldwell was equally pragmatic but believes Tuesday's match against Macedonia is now a must-win.
