Malaga close in on Samaras as striker flys in to hold contract negotiations

Georgios Samaras has travelled to Spain to hold talks over a move to Malaga.

The Greek forward left Celtic at the end of last season and has since been linked with moves to Sevilla, Hamburg, Lokomotiv Moscow, Southampton, Besiktas, Lyon and, tentatively at least, a return to the Scottish champions.

It is likely, however, that Samaras will instead agree a contract with ambitious La Liga club Malaga and could make his debut for the club against Athletic Bilbao on Saturday. The 29-year-old has been without a club since May but performed impressively for Greece during the World Cup finals, with the striker choosing to wait patiently for the right offer to coax him back into competitive action.

Samaras turned down a contract offer from Lyon last week and refused to entertain a lucrative offer from a club in China as he was unwilling to move to Asia. Besiktas, in Turkey, also failed in a move despite making a £25,000-a-week contract offer.

However, the Greek - who spent six years with Celtic - is now expected to agree a move to Spain.
