Here's how David Moyes' players performed:

David De Gea - Had very little to do other than the goals, and was largely blameless for all of them, having been left horribly exposed for two while the other took a deflection. 6/10

Chris Smalling - Stood up impressively to Bayern's endless attacks, particularly in the first half when he got in some important blocks, but the pressure eventually told. 7

Nemanja Vidic - Like Smalling, he had a good first half but he will not want to dwell long on the second, having been beaten far, far too easily by Thomas Muller for the second goal. 5

Patrice Evra - He will long remember his tremendous goal but it was a moment in isolation on the night as he was at fault in the build-up to all three of Bayern's goals, most obviously when he lost Mandzukic seconds after giving United the lead. If they had held it for more than 22 seconds, who knows how it might have ended? 6

Phil Jones - Struggled to deal with Bayern's rotating wingers. 6

Darren Fletcher - Defended well but was caught in possession more than once when United tried to come forward. 5

Michael Carrick - Largely anonymous on a night when United's midfield spent most of their time chasing shadows. David Moyes had emphasised the importance of possession, but his midfield could not keep it for him. 6

Antonio Valencia - He was United's brightest spark going forward and made a brilliant run to tee up Evra's goal. He also had the ball in the net early on but was flagged for offside. 7

Wayne Rooney - Played through the pain as expected, but the injury perhaps told on an off night for the England forward. There was no lack of work ethic but a clear lack of cutting edge as he fluffed his lines in front of goal more than once when given rare, vital chances for United. 5

Shinji Kagawa - Given a big chance in the absence of Juan Mata but did little to press his claims for more regular playing time. He had one long-range shot and made a decent run down the right to produce a testing cross, but there was not enough. 6

Danny Welbeck - Put in plenty of running and made a nuisance of himself when he could, but he was feeding off scraps. 6

Substitutes:

Javier Hernandez (Fletcher, 74) - Sent on when United need goals to rescue the game, but barely had a sniff with Bayern making all the running. 6

Adnan Januzaj (Welbeck, 81) - Like Hernandez, made plenty of running but could do nothing to stem the tide with Bayern on top.
