Stevie May, the St Johnstone striker, has travelled south for talks with Rotheram United and Sheffield Wednesday, after the latter upped their offer for the player to match the £800,000 tabled by their Yorkshire rivals.
Within hours of May's strike in the Perth club's Europa League draw with Spartak Trnava, Wednesday had increased their previous bid for him, paving the way for the 21-year-old to open discussions, with a decision on which club he will join expected at some point today.
Tommy Wright, May's manager at St Johnstone, had become resigned to losing his talisman - who is out of contract next summer - after the forward decided not to sign a contract extension following their Scottish Cup win over Dundee United.
And yesterday he moved quickly to sign long-term target Adam Morgan, a former Liverpool youth player, from Yeovil on a six-month loan deal.
Wright said: "We always said nothing would happen with Stevie before the European game in Slovakia and that's the way it has worked out.
"I'm delighted to get Adam because I've been chasing him for a while. It didn't happen the last time because he went to Yeovil instead but when it became clear he could be available again we've managed to get it over the line this time.
"He's got a lot of quality, he's got good movement and is a great finisher. I see him as an out-and-out striker. He was on the fringes of Liverpool's first team and (manager) Brendan Rodgers has spoken very highly of him."
Morgan will feature in the squad to face Ross County in Dingwall for the sides' season opener today, but defender Brian Easton is ruled out with a foot injury.
Among those raring to when the action gets under way in the Highlands is Graham Carey, with the County player pleased to put a summer of uncertainty behind him.
The former Celtic and St Mirren midfielder's deal expired at the end of last season and with his girlfriend Rachel pregnant, the Dubliner faced a big decision over his future.
However, the couple opted to relocate to the Highlands and, luckily, Derek Adams had kept the door open for Carey with a place in his squad.
After signing a one-year deal, the 25-year-old said: "It was just a matter of sorting out the contract and getting things right. It was just good to get it done before the season started, rather than wait any longer."
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
