STUART McCall would be keen to sign Haris Vuckic from Newcastle on a permanent basis - assuming he is given the nod to stay on as Rangers manager.

The Slovenian is the only member of the controversial "Newcastle five" loan signings to make a serious contribution to the Ibrox club since arriving on deadline day and the former Motherwell manager said he had been impressed enough to try to make the deal permanent.

The 22-year-old has scored five goals in 12 appearances for his new club ahead of this afternoon's meeting with champions Hearts, and has a year remaining on his contract at St James' Park.

"If I was around next year, then he [Vuckic] would be a player that I would be interested in and the club would be interested in," said McCall. "He always has a smile on his face, wants to do extra in training, and is a good type to have around."

Uncertainty about both the manager's future and which division the club will be in next season doesn't help, but the recruitment process for the next campaign is under way at Ibrox. Trialists Milos Milovic and Josef Shirdel visited the club last week, while the club were yesterday linked with a move for Sander Fischer, the captain of Dutch side Excelsior.

The 26-year-old central defender is out of contract at the end of the season, and with Ibrox defender and skipper Lee McCulloch one of 12 players out of contract this summer, talks are believed to have begun with Fischer's agent in a bid to persuade him to move to Glasgow. But Rangers face competition from Belgian side Mechelen as well as Dutch outfits Willem II, NAC Breda and FC Groningen.
