McCoist sees funny side

Ally McCoist laughed off the significance of the document leaked to the BBC last Friday proposing a new football philosophy for the club, writes Richard Wilson. Titled The Way Forward, it talked of total football, Johan Cruyff and Frank Rijkaard, with the underlying message that a change was required in the management of the Rangers team.

McCoist dismissed the relevance of the proposal, which was believed to have been written by David Gowans, who invested £1m in the club before last December's launch on the Alternative Investment Market. The plan was submitted two months ago, but immediately disregarded by all at the club except for Imran Ahmad, the commercial director who left his job at Ibrox last week. The BBC reporters at yesterday's match, Chris McLaughlin and Chick Young, were asked to leave Ibrox before kick-off.

"I believe the person that [wrote] it was an electrician," said McCoist. "If so, I am heading straight home to do a thesis on the way forward for electrical engineering. If the gentleman who wrote it can promise Cruyff and Rijkaard, I will drive over there, bring them back and they can sit in my office. I would certainly move sideways for those two."

McCoist was in a joyful mood after his side received the third division trophy following a 1-0 win over Berwick Rangers. He acknowledged the difficult moments of the campaign and warned next season will also be a challenge. "I just want the opportunity to prove I am the man for Rangers," he said.

"I don't think there will be massive amounts of change for next season. We are bringing in free transfers. We are not going to get the best youngsters, because they cost a lot of money. We have to get a group of players who can get us out of the division. Hopefully with one or two better performances."
