Jim McIntyre has resigned as manager of Queen of the South to take over at Scottish Premiership strugglers Ross County, the Dumfries side have announced.

The managerial position at Ross has been vacant since Derek Adams was sacked on August 28, along with his father George Adams who was the club's director of football.

Ross, who prop up the Premiership standings after losing all five of their matches this season, have yet to officially confirm McIntyre as their new boss, but Queens said in a statement that the 42-year-old had accepted the post in Dingwall.

The statement read: "The club can confirm that manager Jim McIntyre has today resigned his position with immediate effect to take up the position of manager of Ross County.

"He was interviewed for the job on Sunday, offered it on Monday and decided to accept the role after considering it overnight.

"Whilst clearly very disappointed to lose the manager's services, we understand his desire to work at a higher level again and the board would like to thank both he and Ross County FC for the professional manner in which the negotiations took place."

McIntyre, 42, took over at Palmerston Park last summer and led Queen of the South to a fourth-placed finish in the Championship in the 2013/14 campaign.

The former Reading and Dundee United midfielder now leaves with the club also in fourth spot this season after picking up seven points from their opening four games.

The QoS statement added: "We would also like to place on record our thanks for his services over the past 15 months and acknowledgement that he achieved all the targets set for him in that time. We believe he leaves the club well equipped to push for a play-off place in the Championship again despite the quality of clubs at this level this season.

"The process to find a replacement manager will begin immediately."
