Naismith out of qualifiers

Steven Naismith will be missing from Scotland's World Cup qualifying double-header with Wales and Belgium this month after the forward was given a two-match suspension following an off-the-ball incident while playing against Serbia last month.

The Everton player had been named among a 25-man squad for matches away against the Welsh on Friday and then in Belgium five days later despite his case having still to be heard by a FIFA disciplinary committee. The decision to deliver a ban was taken yesterday, Naismith having been judged to have struck an opponent with an elbow.

"Obviously, this is disappointing news but Steven has been very honest and professional throughout the disciplinary process," said Craig Levein, the Scotland manager. "We named a 25-man squad earlier this week to compensate for any potential suspension, which has now been confirmed, and I am confident we have enough strength in that department to offset the loss."
