Chelsea beat 10-man West Bromich Albion to strengthen their grip at the top of the Premier League and also set a club record by starting the campaign with an unbeaten 12-game run.
Jose Mourinho's side prevailed 2-0, with both goals coming in the first half, from Diego Costa and Eden Hazard.
Costa, who was not called up for Spain's last two games so he could rest, scored his 11th goal in 10 matches in the 11th minute.
Oscar passed to the former Atletico Madrid striker and he shot right-footed into the corner.
The second goal came after a Chelsea corner. Cesc Fabregas, who started for the home side despite being a doubt for the game because of a hamstring problem, set up Hazard and he drove into the net from six yards. Four minutes later, West Brom's challenge became even more difficult when Claudio Yacob was shown a red card. The victory put Chelsea on 35 points, 10 clear of Southampton, who are away to Aston Villa tomorrow.
Manchester City came from behind to defeat a lively Swansea side at the Etihad Stadium.
Wilfried Bony gave the visitors a 1-0 lead just nine minutes into the contest - the first ever goal scored by Swansea at their hosts' ground.
However, Stevan Jovetic equalised five minutes later from a Jesus Navas pass and Yaya Toure smashed in the winner in the 62nd minute.
A win would have allowed Swansea to leapfrog West Ham into fourth place, with the East Londoners losing 2-1 to Everton at Goodison Park.
The hosts went in front with a 26th-minute strike from Romelu Lukaku, but substitute Mauro Zarate equalised after the break.
Midfielder Leon Osman then celebrated his 400th appearance for Everton when he scored the winner from a Samuel Eto'o cross.
Newcastle moved past Swansea and West Ham as a late goal from Moussa Sissoko earned them a 1-0 win over QPR.
Burnley, meanwhile, moved up two places to third bottom after an early Danny Ings brace set them on the way to a 2-1 victory at Stoke. Jonathan Walters headed the hosts' reply.
Leicester and Sunderland played out a scoreless draw at the Stadium of Light, with Jeffrey Schlupp and Matt James passing up good chances for the visitors and Scotland striker Steven Fletcher missing when well placed for the hosts.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
