Robertson's a Kompany man

Andrew Robertson's first awestruck meeting with Vincent Kompany ended with him posing alongside the Belgium captain for an impromptu photograph in a Hampden lounge.

The next snap including the pair may well end being shot on the pitch.

The diminutive Dundee United left-back has enjoyed an impressive first season in Scotland's top flight and may well find there is recognition of such with inclusion in Gordon Strachan's squad for next month's friendly against Poland a distinct possibility.

He shone when invited to train with the senior squad ahead of November's friendly against the USA at Hampden but, of course, he had that previous experience of the international arena to call upon. As a trainee at Queen's Park, he handed out programmes before big matches and regularly got the chance to meet household names.

Robertson said: "It wasn't the worst job in the world as you got into all the matches for free. You would always meet the players who weren't playing. When Belgium came I met Vincent Kompany. I got my picture taken with him although I didn't really speak to him. He was massive and I looked pretty small beside him."

His chance to rub shoulders with the world's biggest names could hove into view soon enough with the 19-year-old linked to clubs in the Barclays Premier League. For now, he has more modest aims even if he is quietly hoping for that nod from Strachan.

He said: "I keep in touch with my mates from Queen's Park so if any news comes out they will be the first to text. It would be a huge honour if I did get called up but you can't really think like that. I will wait and see what happens first but my family are nuts so I wouldn't put it past them to come to Poland, if that's the case."
