Saints are first victims of annual cull of Scots in Europe

AND so it begins: the depressing summer cull of Scotland's European representatives is underway.

What might otherwise have been an enjoyable evening – pleasant weather in Perth, a sizeable crowd, a friendly atmosphere, a tie still in the balance – predictably deteriorated into the most bleakly familiar outcome.

In failing to turn around their first-leg deficit to the solid but unremarkable Turkish side Eskisehirspor, St Johnstone were elbowed out of the Europa League, 3-1 on aggregate, and the number of Scottish UEFA participants was cut from five to four. This is the time of year when the also-rans get flushed away, and there's no disguising the fact that this country contributes more than its fair share of them.
