RESERVE goalkeeper Scott Bain may be asked to take a pain-killing injection and play in Dundee's next game after newcomer Arvid Schenk conceded six goals in a horrible debut at Dundee United.
First choice Kyle Letheran was injured in the warm-up before Tannadice and Bain was due to be out for another fortnight, but despondent manager Paul Hartey admitted rushing him back was an option after Dundee conceded six goals to United for the first time ever.
Schenk, a 25-year-old German signed on a short-term deal, was beaten by Chris Erskine, twice, Stuart Armstrong, Gary Mackay-Steven, Jaroslaw Fojut and Charlie Telfer and although he was blameless for most of the goals his confidence seemed to disappear during the 6-2 rout.
"We have to look at what we can do for the game on Sunday [at home to Ross County]," said Hartley. "Letheran is going to be out and it may be that Bain has to take an injection to try to play. Arvid came here as the third-choice keeper and we've only resigned him for another month because we thought Bain would be out for another couple of weeks so we will assess the situation over the next couple of days. If he plays again he has to show character. He's old enough, he has had a bad day but not all the blame is down to him, we have to look at today's performance as a team and how we could have avoided the goals."
Dundee United manager Jackie McNamara said the victory was the equal of anything he had achieved since taking over at Tannadice almost two years ago. "This ranks up there with last season's Scottish Cup semi-final and and the 5-0 quarter-final win at Inverness. I'm delighted [with the record derby scoreline] but to be honest I don't really think about these things. I only think about the victory first and foremost. But it's nice to get that scoreline because it sends the fans home happy. There was a disappointment after the St Johnstone game [United lost in Perth on Saturday]. It's all ifs and buts but if we had won that we could be sitting top of the league with the Celtic game off. Winning this one does ask the question."
