Stuart McCall, the Motherwell manager, expects James McFadden to sign a new contract with the club next week but must remain patient to discover if Stephen McManus also intends to sign for next season.

The former has received a verbal deal and that is expected to be formalised this weekend, while McManus has trained with the club this summer.

However, the Scotland defender spent this week with Hibernian and has also attracted interest from sides in England. He will inform McCall of his decision next week.

"I think James is ready. A verbal offer has been put to him and it just needs to be written down," said the Motherwell manager, whose team take on Doncaster Rovers today. "We are quietly confident it will be signed on Monday or Tuesday.

"[McManus] is also one we would love to get. He'll make his decision over the weekend."
