Second Division: Lyle's sweet strike cracks deadlock

IT took Queen of the South almost the whole of the first half to get their noses in front against stubborn bottom-of-the-table Albion Rovers at Palmerston Park.

But Derek Lyle broke the deadlock in the 43rd minute with a left-foot shot and the home side went on to extend their advantage at the top to a thumping 21 points with a 3-0 win.

Albion refused to lie down to Queen of the South and it was not until the 75th minute that Nicky Clark doubled Queens' advantage with an instinctive finish, his 28th goal of the season.Mark Durnan, who had assisted Clark, then added the third goal just six minutes later.Alloa Athletic, unbeaten in their previous 10 home matches, slipped up 1-0 at the hands of Arbroath at Recreation Park as their pursuit lost pace.Derek Holmes scored the only goal late in the first half from Paul Sheerin's pass.Alloa had chances to salvage things in the second half but could not find a way past Scott Morrison, the Arbroath goalkeeper.Ayr United eased their relegation concerns with a 2-1 home win over Forfar Athletic.Liam Buchanan netted the first goal after 19 minutes and then he provided the cross for Michael Donald to head home the second, midway through the second half.Iain Campbell pulled a goal back from the penalty spot after 74 minutes but Ayr held on for an important three points.Stranraer and Stenhousemuir shared a 1-1 draw at Stair Park. Darren Gribben struck early for the home side but Kevin McKinlay equalised for the visitors midway through the first half.Brechin City's match with East Fife was called off due to a waterlogged pitch just an hour before kick-off.
