Second Division: Nine men cast cloud on under-weather leaders

Queen of the South let a two-goal lead slip as they were held 2-2 by Stenhousemuir at Palmerston Park in a match in which the league leaders finish up with just nine players.

Derek Young, in the first half, and Kevin Holt, late in the game, both received their marching orders for dangerous challenges in an incident-packed game.

Mark Durnan gave Queen of the South the perfect start when he headed in a Danny Carmichael cross after just two minutes. The home side then opened the second period in similar fashion, this time Nicky Clark getting his head to a Chris Mitchell cross to net his 11th goal of the campaign.

But the match turned midway through the half when John Gemmell showed his predatory instincts to score from close range after a shot had been deflected against a post.Shortly afterwards, Paul Burns was penalised for a challenge in the penalty area and Brown Ferguson scored with the resultant spot kick. Both sides had chances to win the game before Holt picked up the second red card of the game.Forfar Athletic and Arbroath both lost the chance to make up ground on the leaders as they fell to heavy defeats, Forfar losing 3-0 at East Fife and Arbroath going down 4-0 at Albion Rovers.Forfar's task was made all the more difficult after Martyn Fotheringham picked up their fourth red card of the season after only eight minutes had elapsed.Paul McManus almost took advantage immediately, but his shot struck the post and it was not until seven minutes from half-time that David Muir headed in a Paul Willis cross.Even then, East Fife did not get things all their own way and it was not until the closing minutes that Scott Smith and then McManus found the net to see them home and dry.David Crawford scored twice as Albion saw off Arbroath. He opened the scoring in the 16th minute with a curling left-foot shot and Arbroath had chances to draw level before Steven Howarth scored a second after 72 minutes. Tony Stevenson scored the third with a penalty before Crawford nabbed his second goal.To compound Arbroath's misery, Paul Currie picked up a late red card after two bookings.Alloa Athletic moved joint-second, Ben Gordon's first-half goal enough to see off Ayr United 1-0 at Recreation Park.Ray McKinnon enjoyed a winning start as Brechin City manager as Andy Jackson scored twice and David McKenna also found the net in a 3-0 victory over Stranraer.
