Severin, Constantine in frame for Dumbarton manager's job

Scott Severin, the former Hearts, Aberdeen, Dundee United and Scotland midfielder, is a contender for the manager's job at Dumbarton – he is on a short-list of candidates to be interviewed – while the ousted Alan Adamson has broken his silence over his sacking from the Scottish League Division 1 club, writes Craig Stewart.

Severin, who won 15 caps, is attending a UEFA training course, having been forced into retirement from playing in March, after sustaining a leg break seven months earlier. He is one of the candidates interesting directors at the Bet Butler Stadium club.

A surprise candidate is the experienced FIFA instructor Stephen Constantine, who has managed four national sides as well working with clubs in England and Cyprus. The 50-year-old Londoner, who has a UEFA pro licence and is as a member of FIFA's elite coaches' panel, has submitted an application as he looks to continue his career in which he has taken charge of Nepal, India, Malawi and Sudan, as well as working with Millwall and Bournemouth.Adamson, dismissed last week after two years in charge, had led the club from the foot of Division 2 to promotion via the play-offs but was dismissed after his side failed to secure a win in their first nine league games.The experience has left the former British Police team manager hurt. "At first, I was a bit shocked by the decision but now I am simply angry," he said. "I asked what the reason was and they told me it was down to results. I know that two draws in nine games does not look great but it was our first run of games in a new league and I reckon we were improving and had competed well in seven of those games. I was told that results are all that matter and that the club could not be loyal. I am still shell-shocked; I thought my record there would have counted for something."Assistant to the previous manager Jim Chapman, he added: "When Jim and I came in December 2007 Dumbarton were second bottom of Division 3 and the club progressed ever year. At the start of last season we only had three signed players and we started slowly before coming good and being promoted via the play-offs."In reality, our promotion probably came too soon but, when players go out and win you games, what are you meant to tell them: 'don't do that as we will get promoted'? I was loyal to the squad that won us promotion so to be told that the board could not show the same loyalty hurt."Adamson's last game in charge was a 2-0 defeat by Falkirk and he said: "After the game Steven Pressley and Alex Smith came in for chat and they said they were pleased with the win as we had dominated the second half. Alex even said that he hoped I would not get any pressure from 'upstairs' as the team were still playing well. I got the answer to that two days later."
