SIR ALEX FERGUSON is to be approached over taking on a specially-created role within the Scottish Football Association.

Ferguson is a close, long-term friend of the new SFA president, Alan McRae, who is effusive about the contribution the former Manchester United manager could make to promoting the game in Scotland and improving the sport from the ground up.

The 73-year-old serves as a coaching ambassador for UEFA and similar work would certainly boost the profile of the national association while giving them added political weight, but McRae is understood to be keen on discussing the possibility of him being involved in rather more detailed projects.

"We would like to get him involved with the SFA in some shape or form to help Scottish football," he said.

"Being an administrator is a different thing to what Alex has done in his past as a manager and a coach. He might do ambassadorial stuff, but I would like to think we could maybe get him involved a bit more than that. I don't know.

"He's still a man that's in demand all over the world, but we've spoken about having him and others involved in the Scottish FA to give it a wee bit more of a wow factor.

"Alex is still interested in Scottish football. Believe me, he knows as much about our game as most people and he's been away from it for a long time.

"I'd like to think we can get him and other people involved. I'll try it because Alex has so much to offer."

Ferguson is already booked to return to Glasgow on the SFA's invitation for the Euro 2016 qualifying match with Germany at Hampden Park on September 7.

The match takes place just three days before the 30th anniversary of Jock Stein's death in the immediate aftermath of the victory over Wales at Ninian Park, which secured a place in the 1986 World Cup finals.

Ferguson was Stein's assistant with the national side and will be present at the game along with players involved that night in Cardiff and members of Stein's family.

"He's coming up to the Germany game and will join us for dinner before the match along with the German delegation," confirmed McRae.
