To mark Saturday's William Hill Scottish Cup final between Falkirk and Inverness Caledonian Thistle, we look back at 18 finals from the past - six involving non-Old Firm teams, six won by Rangers, and six won by Celtic.
Celtic 2-1 Aberdeen, 1954
An epic game, in which Celtic, led by captain Jock Stein and with Neil Mochan a substantial presence up front, defeated the Dons to clinch their first league and cup double for 40 years. An Alec Young own goal put Celtic in front. Paddy Buckley equalised for Aberdeen but Sean Fallon scored Celtic's winning goal.
Celtic 3-2 Dunfermline, 1965
The start of a huge part of Celtic's history, with the recently-appointed Jock Stein leading his players to the first of 25 major trophies under his reign. Dunfermline had given as good as they got, but Bertie Auld twice equalised for Celtic and Billy McNeill headed home the winner from a corner-kick to give Celtic their first taste of silverware in eight years.
Celtic 4-0 Rangers, 1969
Goals from Stevie Chalmers, George Connelly, Bobby Lennox and Billy McNeill routed a Rangers side that included Alex Ferguson. It was the first time Rangers had lost a Scottish Cup final in 40 years, and Celtic's first win over their rivals in the final since 1904. The game was watched by a crowd of some 132,000 - those were the days!
Celtic 6-1 Hibs, 1972
A hat-trick by Dixie Deans (never Hibs' favourite Celtic player), two goals by Lou Macari and one goal by Billy McNeill steamrollered the Edinburgh side in this rather one-sided final watched by a crowd of 106,102. Celtic equalled the record for the biggest Scottish Cup final win; it was nearly another 'Hampden in the Sun' - the 7-1 hammering of Rangers in the 1957 Scottish League Cup Final.
Celtic 2-1 Dundee United, 1988
Celtic marked their centenary year by clinching their first double in 11 years. To their 35th league title they add their 28th Scottish Cup. Kevin Gallacher had put United ahead but Celtic's charismatic Frank McAvennie scored twice to give Billy McNeill's side victory.
Celtic 3-0 Motherwell, 2011
This was Neil Lennon's first trophy as Celtic manager, goals from Ki Sung-Yeung, Stephen Craigan (own goal) and Charlie Mulgrew gave his new charges a comfortable run-out against Motherwell, who could not repeat their heroics of 1991, when they had vanquished Dundee United.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
