SOMETIMES goalless draws can be fruitful. Dumbarton will take more from their 0-0 home clash with Queen of the South on a day when the three teams beneath them in the table all failed to gather anything.

Queen of the South looked the more likely to take the full quota of points but ended the match short-handed after Derek Lyle was sent off after an off-the-ball incident with Archie Campbell, the Dumbarton substitute.

Both sides struggled to construct much on an atrocious day but Lewis Kidd had an early opening only to find Danny Rogers equal to his effort.

Ian McShane was unfortunate not to break the deadlock in the first half when his header struck the inside of the post and the Queen of the South player had another chance, early in the second half, but only prompted an excellent save from Rogers.

Dumbarton did not offer much in the way of an attacking threat but Mark Gilhaney did swipe a couple of shots wide either side of half-time.

Scott Agnew could not keep a 20-yard free-kick down midway through the second half and Campbell had a late opportunity when he scurried clear of the Queen of the South defence but the angle was too tight for him to nail the target.

Raith Rovers comfortably saw off bottom-of-the-table Livingston 2-0 at Almondvale, both of the goals coming in the first half.

Ross Callachan opened the scoring when he picked up a loose ball and drilled a 25-yard shot into the bottom corner of the net.

Livingston swarmed forward to try and salvage the situation but were only caught on the counter-attack as they left themselves exposed at the back.

Barry McKay fed Mark Stewart on the overlap and the midfield player picked out Lewis Vaughan in a crowded six-yard box to double the visitor's lead.

Stewart could have made it 3-0 in the second half but his effort came back off the post and Livingston did not offer much in response.

The closest they came was when substitute Miles Hippolyte headed over when in a great position to claim a goal back for the home side.
