FALKIRK'S play-off plans were blown off course after they went down 1-0 at Dumbarton.
In a game ruined by a troublesome wind, Dumbarton won it through a terrific strike from Archie Campbell with nine minutes left.
Peter Houston, the Falkirk manager, believed the conditions had a big impact on the game and prevented his side moving up to fourth place in the table.
Danny Rogers also made a significant contribution in the Dumbarton goal, with a string of saves to keep Falkirk - and John Baird, in particular - at bay.
Will Vaulks tested Rogers with a shot from distance
which the Dumbarton goalkeeper did well to divert for a
corner-kick and it set the pattern for what was to follow.
Baird came close shortly afterwards from a Blair Alston
corner but shot narrowly wide. Peter Grant met another Alston corner late in the first half but his header drifted wide.
Falkirk tried their luck again through Craig Sibbald but he was inches wide of target with a curling a left-foot shot late in the first half.
Twice in quick succession at the start of the second half, Rogers denied netbound shots from Baird and it became increasingly obvious that it was not going to be Falkirk's day.
Falkirk also had a penalty claim brushed aside when Baird tumbled in the penalty area.
It all amounted to nothing as Campbell took the initiative into his own hands and beat Jamie MacDonald with a ferocious shot from outside the penalty area which found the top corner of the net.
Even then, Baird had a late chance but the ball appeared to hold up in the wind and he could not apply the finish with his head.
Livingston continue to teeter close to the edge and had to settle for a point in a 2-2 draw at Alloa.
Even then, it took a goal from Rory Boulding with just two minutes to salvage a draw after the home side had led through a Liam Buchanan double.
The point moves Livingston closer to second-bottom Cowdenbeath but they were seeking all three points.
Again, the wind did not help the spectacle. Livingston threatened early on through Jason Talbot and Kyle Jacobs and Ryan McCord and Kevin Cawley responded for Alloa but neither goalkeeper was too concerned.
Kyle Jacobs missed the best chance of the first half for
Livingston when he met Talbot's corner with his head but could not keep his header down.
Alloa who took the lead eight minutes after the
break when Michael Chopra picked out Buchanan and he
scored his 13th of the season.
Livingston hit back and equalised when Ben Gordon diverted the
ball into his own net under pressure from Jordan White.
Substitute Danny Mullen struck the post for Livingston but it was Buchanan who struck again at the other end after 73 minutes after his initial shot was blocked. Alloa sensed three points but Boulding had other ideas.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
