Morton pushed their title credentials with a 2-1 win at Forfar Athletic to move second in the table.
Joe McKee gave them a half-time lead when he netted from close range but Forfar roared back in the second half with Danny Denholm equalising after 66 minutes.
Peter MacDonald again proved his worth to Morton when he drove home a decisive second, high into the net beyond Robert Douglas, five minutes later to give Morton a valuable three points.
Stranraer extended their lead to two points at the top but toiled to see off bottom club Stirling Albion 1-0 at Stair Park.
The leaders found Greg Paterson in good form in the opposing goal and it took them all of 86 minutes to find a way through, Frank McKeown scoring the all-important goal.
Even then, Phil Johnston could have equalised moments later but David Mitchell was well positioned to save as Stirling, not for the first time this season, lost narrowly.
Dunfermline Athletic kept up their challenge with a 2-0 win over Ayr United at Somerset Park.
Dunfermline dominated the first half and did everything but
score - Andy Barrowman coming closest.
Gregor Buchanan saw a header well saved by David Hutton at the
start of the second half and the pressure finally paid off in
66 minutes when Andy Geggan headed home for Dunfermline. David
Hopkirk added the second in injury-time to secure the three points.
Peterhead saw off Stenhousemuir 2-0 in difficult conditions at Balmoor.
Peterhead went in front after 32 minutes when Cammy Kerr
scored after his initial shot was blocked.
Rory McAllister then saw a penalty kick saved by Greg Fleming
before half-time.
New recruit Kevin Dzierzawski made it 2-0 after the break from
McAllister's pass to wrap up the points.
Airdrieonians and Brechin City drew 1-1 at New Broomfield.
After a goalless first half, Alan Trouten broke the deadlock
when he put Brechin ahead after an hour with a measured finish.
But Airdrie were level ten minutes later when Jamie Bain
netted a deserved equaliser with a wonderful strike from fully 30 yards.
Both sides had chances to win it but it was Airdrie who came closest right at the death when Graeme Smith made a tremendous save to tip a header from Luca Gasporotto over his crossbar.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
