It is still too early for a club's placing to influence their ambitions in the league but Alloa Athletic will allow their rise to third in the SPFL Championship to enliven hopes of causing an upset in the Scottish League Cup second round tomorrow.

The part-time side will travel to face Aberdeen, a trip fuelled by enthusiasm after a 3-1 win over Cowdenbeath on Saturday.

Ben Gordon and Kane Hemmings had traded goals before Andy Kirk put Alloa ahead with an assured finish, the scoreline then supplemented by substitute Eddie Ferns. It is a win which has given Alloa the courage to show conviction against Aberdeen. "We have to express ourselves," said Kirk. "You never know what might happen."

Dumbarton are another side considering an unexpectedly promising season, brushing Morton aside with a 3-1 win on Saturday. Falkirk also scored three goals - more than enough to get the better of Livingston - while Championship rivals Raith Rovers and Dundee drew 0-0, albeit the former had a strike ruled out controversially.

Their Fife neighbours Dunfermline Athletic were also left agape as they recovered from 4-2 down to beat Stenhousemuir 5-4 in League 1. There was drama, too, for Brechin City after Graeme Smith saved a last-minute penalty to ensure a win over Forfar Athletic.

The most arresting result in League 2 came at Broadwood as Clyde ended a 22-year wait for a home win over Queen's Park.
