Ostensibly, his day job is to check the progress of the likes of Tony Watt, Dylan McGeouch, John McGinn and Kenny McLean for the national youth teams, but he could never be just a detached observer for a fixture which throws together two of his former clubs, where he spent 14 years of his professional life.
