It was typically Tartan Army: noble, vainglorious, and just a tad daft.

Scotland's World Cup qualifier match with Serbia was in doubt for much of today after heavy snow in the early hours of this morning.

There were fears that the match at the Karadjordje Stadium could be called off.

And then members of the Tartan Army joined in the snow-clearing operation to ensure the pitch was cleared in time for tonight's match.

Around 1,200 Tartan Army member were due at the game in Novi Sad, which is about an hour from the Scots' base in Belgrade.

As our pictures show, there was no need for cold weather gear: kilts are fine, no matter the temperatures.

The gesture won a good response from locals.  Vesna Jenic, from Belgrade, came on to HeraldScotland and posted in our comments forum:  "I am a Serbian woman. I registered specially to tell you that you are great!

"You can be proud of the guys! I wish you with all my heart that you win! You Scots have a big heart!"

No points on the pitch, maybe, but another triumph in international diplomacy for the Tartan Army.
