Terry Butcher is in the running to become the new head coach of the New Zealand national team.

The position has been vacant since Ricki Herbert resigned in November, having failed to lead his side to the World Cup finals in Brazil.

It is understood that Butcher - who previously spent a short spell in charge of Sydney FC - has applied for the position as he seeks a return to the game following his sacking as the Hibernian manager earlier this month. Former Crystal Palace manager Iain Dowie and erstwhile Northern Ireland head coach Lawrie Sanachez are also interested in the role, with an appointment likely to be made next month.
