Trapattoni grants 'mortified' McLean lucky second chance

Giovanni Trapattoni, the Republic of Ireland manager, has warned James McClean that he is lucky to still have an international career following his foul-mouthed Twitter rant.McClean was left on the bench as the Republic stole a 2-1 win over Kazakhstan and described his personal experience in Astana as a "f******g joke".

Trapattoni hauled the player in front of the squad for a public dressing down in London yesterday and retained the player for tonight's friendly against Oman only after he made a grovelling apology.

"Another manager, English or German, would have said 'take your bag and go home', but I might need him," said Trapattoni.
