IS there anybody out there who doesn't feel duped by events at Rangers?

First, it was Sir David Murray who claimed to have been tricked by Craig Whyte, when the Motherwell-based venture capitalist used Ticketus money to take on the club's debt. Now it is Whyte himself who claims to have been fooled by Charles Green, and is reportedly threatening legal action to claim £1 million a year for life or 25% of his shares.

You could also throw in Francisco Sandaza, whose contract was ripped up after being taken in by a hoax phone caller, but the people I really feel sorry for are the club's fans. Just when you thought it was all calming down following the tax tribunal, the EBT inquiry and last week's Third Division title win, it all flares up again. Their club is been dragged through the gutter again and they deserve to know the truth.

There is no way Green is going to come out of this one smelling of roses. Some people have always questioned whether Whyte, pictured, was lurking in the background and taped conversations show there has indeed been communication between him, Green and the club's former commercial director Imran Ahmad, with Green admitting he still has £137,000 of Whyte's money sitting in a bank account.

The courts may yet decide if there was more to it, but until then the whole episode puts a huge question mark over the relationship between Green and Ally McCoist, especially on the back of chief scout Neil Murray going and the departure of Sandaza.

But if Green's plan all along was to dupe Whyte then I reckon most normal people would think "good on him". Some people in this world deserve that kind of fate and Whyte, a guy who has caused so much harm, not just to Rangers, but other football clubs and businesses as well, is surely one of them. There was always a suspicion that Whyte might come away with something, a wee sweetener just for getting out, but let's hope he ends up with approximately the same amount as he put in: nothing. I would hope 99.9% of people would want him to get his comeuppance and receive a taste of his own medicine.

It is hardly great PR for Rangers, though, particularly if Whyte makes good on his threat and this results in another lengthy legal wrangle between the two men. With Sandaza already having admitted he will pursue a claim against the club for wrongful dismissal, and the SFA and the SPL seeking costs for previous cases, there could be lawyers' fees everywhere.

Green is outspoken and he might not get it right all the time, but he strikes me as a ruthless businessmen who is prepared to fight for his interests all the way. You have to say that Rangers are in a better place than they were when he took over and last week's title win was the first step back up the ladder. OK, so performances haven't been great, but they have won the league with five games to spare.

But I have to say I didn't like the way the Sandaza situation was handled and I don't think he comes out of that one too well. We all know the club's Spanish striker was naive and silly for getting into the details of his contract with some hoaxer pretending to be an agent. But, at the end of it all, he was genuinely tricked into thinking he was an agent so he let slip what he was on. Agents have been known to phone players to see if they can get them a better deal, that kind of thing can happen in the business.

People might say it was hardly ideal for the club to use EBTs in the past, but the one thing the Rangers of old wouldn't do is rip up contracts or look for ways out. The way you were treated at Rangers, from behind the scenes to meals, hotels, travel to games, was always top notch. I certainly wouldn't have liked to have been told my contract was being ripped up because I had been tricked into leaking information in a hoax phone call.

As for the Neil Murray situation, that is also just the way the business is. Football managers, scouts and players get jobs because of pals, so I don't mind if Green comes in and starts using other agents. I can only assume he wasn't happy with some of the foreign signings at the club, and no wonder.

I don't think Green is a knight in shining armour, but he is showing that he is a ruthless businessman and that if you cross him you will be away. If he doesn't think you are doing a job properly you are out the door. He got rid of Neil Murray, he got rid of Sandaza and now he is simply confirming that he is out to make money. There could be more to come, as he takes on the SPL and the SFA over league reconstruction and is seemingly willing to fight to the bitter end with everybody. I wouldn't have liked the 12-12-18 as a player, but something has to change, although the governing bodies can't just introduce it half way through a season and expect everyone to be happy about it.

Ally McCoist is financially secure and doesn't need to fear for the future, but if Green is capable of doing all this you would have to be concerned about what he could also do with him and his backroom staff. But if Green genuinely managed to dupe Whyte it might just be the best deal he has ever done.
