Portugal defender Fabio Coentrao has been ruled out of the remainder of the World Cup with a thigh injury.

The Real Madrid full-back pulled up sharply during the second half of Portugal's 4-0 defeat by Germany on Monday night and was replaced by Andre Almeida.

Coentrao underwent scans yesterday and the Portuguese football federation confirmed afterwards that the 26-year-old would play no further part in the tournament. An FPF statement read: "According to the tests, Coentrao is unfit for competition for a period exceeding the duration of the World Cup."

Striker Hugo Almeida (hamstring) and goalkeeper Rui Patricio (thigh) also underwent scans on injuries sustained in the match with Germany.
