Chris Doak paid tribute to the host of the Saltire Energy Paul Lawrie Matchplay after knocking his countryman out of the event.

The Glaswegian came through after a bizarre final hole which saw Lawrie knock his ball 40 yards left of the hole onto the fairway of the second hole before Doak then carved his right, fearing it had gone out of bounds before finding it in a bunker in a strip of land deemed “ground under repair”

After taking a free drop he knocked his second onto the green, setting up the par that was enough to protect his one hole lead and end the match.

“Paul’s done fantastic for the tournament and I’m sure everyone would like to see him here for the weekend but it’s not to be,” he said.
