Catriona Matthew has one final chance to earn an automatic place in Europe’s Solheim Cup team at this week’s final qualifying event, the Canadian Pacific Open.

The 45-year-old from North Berwick, a veteran of seven European sides down the years and an ever present in the team since 2003, has slipped out of the qualifying places on the Rolex world rankings but could still jump above Spain’s Carlota Ciganda, who is narrowly ahead of her, and pinch the final automatic place.

Should Matthew fail in that particular quest, then the likelihood is that she will be handed one of four wildcards from European captain, Carin Koch.

Suzann Pettersen, Gwladys Nocera, Charley Hull and Mel Reid have already qualified from the European points list while the next four members of the side from the world points list will be confirmed after this weekend’s Canadian contest. Koch will then finalise her line-up when she names her four picks on Tuesday ahead of Europe’s defence of the Solheim Cup in Germany next month.
