A double-bogey six on the closing hole was hardly what you’d call a final flourish but Robert Arnott could afford to stumble over the finishing line as the popular Tartan Tour stalwart claimed the biggest win of his long career in the Silversea Senior PGA Professional Championship at Foxhills in Surrey.

The 52-year-old Bishopbriggs veteran served up a triple Scotch as he became the third successive Scotsman to win the title and led a Caledonian one-two ahead of Carnoustie’s defending champion, Fraser Mann.

Arnott, whose playing opportunities on the European Senior Tour have been limited, signed off with a three-over 76 for a one-under aggregate of 217 and claimed the £6000 first prize by two shots from his Scottish PGA colleague Mann.

“I had a four shot lead coming down the last and I thought I’d just plod my way up and was a wee bit careless as I missed from six inches,” reflected Arnott of that footering finale. “I made it hard for myself but it feels fantastic.

“There are some good players here which makes me feel like I could’ve gone on the Senior Tour and held my card but there were just no opportunities

“This has to be the best thing I’ve won. It’s a national event and I’ve never won a national event so this has got be up there.”

Mann closed with a spirited 71 – one of just two under-par cards on a tough closing day – as he made a stout defence of his crown.

“If anyone else was going to win it other than me then Robert would be No 1 on the list,” said Mann.
